Event description

Description

The Fleet River is so called - not the "River Fleet" - because it's not regarded as a major waterway, unlike the River Thames. Nevertheless it is the largest and best-known of London's 21 underground rivers. It has served a variety of purposes and attracted the attention of writers. Its sources are on Hampstead Heath.

This walk traces the Fleet's western tributary from a southern corner of the Heath to the northern boundary of Kentish Town. The places it covers reflect a remarkable community spirit.

Among other sights you will see: a former home of Agatha Christie, a secret garden of global significance and a stone circle of quotations from famous Hampstead residents.

You will hear about the origins of the Royal Free Hospital, learn why George Orwell came to hate books and find out about the Fleet River's changing fortunes.
