The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is pleased to announce the 2016-17 Inaugural Lecture Series.
Inaugural lectures are an opportunity for Professors to introduce themselves and to present an overview of their own contribution to their field as well as highlight the latest developments in a discipline to an audience consisting of both members of the university and the wider general public.
Each lecture will take place at Guy's Campus and will be followed by a drinks reception.

Overcoming the defences: HIV versus human innate immunity
Abstract: To replicate efficiently in its host, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the causative agent of AIDS, must avoid the human immune response. In recent years the ability of HIV-1 encoded proteins to counteract the innate immune system, particularly the antiviral activity of type 1 interferons, has been recognized as key to successful viral transmission.
In this lecture Stuart will give an overview of his career to date with a focus on some of the mechanisms by which HIV-1 and its related simian immunodeficiency viruses achieve this. In particular, he will highlight the cellular entry and exit pathways as key targets of interferon-regulated antiviral factors the IFITM family and Tetherin/BST-2 respectively.
In the case of Tetherin, Stuart will describe how the virally encoded Vpu protein antagonizes it function.
Stuart will also cover more recent work from his group demonstrating that Vpu and another HIV-1 encoded protein, Vpr, target the early warning systems in the infected cells that trigger the expression of inflammatory genes. Determining how the virus targets these innate responses has important implications for our understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS as well as potentially opening up new therapeutic targets. Finally, he will touch upon how they are applying their understanding to how the host interferon system targets a very different viral pathogen, Ebola virus.
