Event description
Fonthill House Charity Garden Opening in aid of Pancreatic Cancer Action. Sunday 11th July 2021 12pm - 5pm

About this event

Lord Margadale has kindly agreed to open his gardens on Sunday 11th July 2021 between 12pm - 5pm in aid of Pancreatic Cancer Action and in memory of Moisie Barton.

Pancreatic Cancer Action was founded by Ali Stunt in 2010. She is one of the lucky survivors having been diagnosed herself with it in 2007, but because her illness was detected early enough she was able to have a life-saving operation. 90% of people diagnosed with it are not so fortunate. Pancreatic Cancer Action’s mission is to improve the survival rates by ensuring diagnosis of people is early and in time for surgery (currently the only potential cure).

Fonthill is usually associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house Fonthill Abbey at the end of the 18th century. But it is in fact only one of several important houses to be built on the Estate since the 16th century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished.

James Morrison, great grandfather of the first Baron (John Morrison, Lord Margadale’s grandfather) became the greatest textile wholesaler in England, a prominent merchant banker and consequently had the second largest non-landed fortune in Britain after Nathan Rothschild. James bought the 1,200 acre Estate from the Farquhar heirs in 1830. It is now 9,000 acres. The present Fonthill House was built by John Morrison in 1973 on the foundations of a former house known as Little Ridge.

With the green fingers of the Head Gardener, Erwin Kraan, and two renowned garden designers, Tania Compton and Marie-Louise Agius, the gardens at Fonthill House are continually improving and developing. There are formal areas, an ornamental and organic kitchen garden, mixed planting of shrubs and herbaceous perennials, bulbs and annuals. There is also small a selection of old and new sculptures including a water feature by William Pye. To the north of the house there are wonderful woodland walks with azaleas, magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons, sweet chestnuts and tall majestic oaks.

Entrance is £7 per person, children can go free. Well behaved dogs are welcome on leads. Unfortunately there is restricted wheelchair access. However, there will be some delicious refreshments and a large open sided tent to shield under from the warm sunshine Lord Margadale is hoping to have.

Please have your tickets ready for inspection when you arrive at the gate, either a screenshot or a printed version.
