Description

ELIXIR Food and Nutrition Kickoff Workshop, 23-24 September 2019

Europe is faced with a range of food and health related challenges. Current levels of food production and consumption are unsustainable (e.g. pollution, depletion of natural resources). In addition, dietary quality of current consumption patterns is paired with socio-economic disparities in health. Obesity levels and chronic diseases such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain forms of cancer are alarming. Demographic trends such as the ageing population and urbanisation make these issues even more urgent. Therefore, there is growing interest in public health, and environmental sustainability as related to food, behaviour and well-being of consumers throughout the life cycle.

There is a competitive advance to those that can capitalise effectively on existing data for the development of products and interventions that help shifting current consumption patterns towards more healthy and sustainable diets. New technology and research is needed for this purpose, including:

  1. The socio-psychological determinants of diet and lifestyle, i.e. what, when, where, why and how of food consumption (RICHFIELDS, 2015-2018);

  2. How food intake relates to consumers health and wellbeing (ENPADASI, FNH-RI, roadmap 2019);

  3. How current food practices relate to the entire food system, including the food chain, the cultural and the policy context (FNH-RI, roadmap 2019).

To answer key questions on societal challenges that relate to food, nutrition and health linking different types of (big) data is needed. Current developments in advanced information and communication technologies bring opportunities for researchers to monitor and collect the required information on lifestyle. Sustainability of our food system requires also big data solutions in order to secure optimal use of limited food commodities & resources and model impacts at scale. This emergence of big and/or open data and new generation of data-driven research, now comes with an urgent call for the development of digital research infrastructure. The development of such digital RIs is expected to facilitate and accelerate research in many domains.

This kickoff meeting will discuss the development of a strategy and strategic white paper for a potential ELIXIR Community in Food and Nutrition.

ELIXIR Communities coordinate ELIXIR’s activities in particular domains of expertise by bringing together experts to develop specialised standards, services, workshops and Implementation Studies. Currently ELIXIR recognises eleven Communities are: Human Data, Rare Diseases, Marine Metagenomics, Plant Sciences, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Galaxy, Human Copy Number Variation, Microbial Biotechnology and Intrinsically Disorderd Proteins and Structural Bioinformatics.

A draft agenda is available here.
