Foraging for Wild Food & Medicines

The practice of gathering food from the wild is possible even in the cities. Within London’s densely populated urban environment you will find an abundance of edible and medicinal wild fruits, vegetables, plants and fungi and at Woodberry Wetlands alone there are more than 70 species. Whether you would like to forage for personal enjoyment or learn it as a ‘survival’ skill, this walk will give you a taste of the basic guidelines you will need to follow in locating, collecting and preparing wild foods and medicines.
Your tutor will introduce you to resources and techniques to help you identify common varieties and show you how and when to harvest the most useful parts of the plants. During the walk you will learn which plants you can and can’t eat, where to find them and how to prepare your own wild foods at home and along the way you can sample some tasters of foraged syrups and tinctures and materials will be provided to ensure that your learning does not stop once the walk ends.
You will gain an understanding of the risks and benefits of using foraged plans for food and medicine and the importance of sustainable foraging. There are many laws and forms of protection in place for plant species and you will not only learn the legal aspects of foraging, but the accepted etiquette as well. There are also safety issues to consider when foraging and you will be taught what to look out for and precautions to take with urban foraged foods.
