Join Landscape Learn in collaboration with the Landscape Design Lab of the University of Florence from the 27-29 April 2018 for a behind the scenes exploration of the gardens and landscapes of Florence.

Our programme of activities will reimagine the Grand Tour; rather than front of house we will offer a glimpse behind the scenes of some of the most well-known landscapes and gardens in Florence from the perspective of local experts who manage and care for these places.

We will ask how a city like Florence can once again be at the centre of innovation in the fields of Art, Architecture and Landscape design and be responsive to changing communities and environments.

The itinerary will include:
Day 1 - Behind the scenes of the Gardens (Full day – starting at 9:30am)
Giardino di Boboli grotto
Learning about the Giardino di Boboli and Giardino Bardini in the company of:
- Bianca Maria Landi (Head of the Boboli Garden),
- Ivo Matteuzzi (Boboli gardeners coordinator),
- Maria Chiara Pozzana (Landscape Architect and expert in historic garden restoration),
- Pietro Desiró & Rosita D’Agrosa (Artist for Cartavetra),
- Gabriele Paolinelli and Enrico Falqui (Landscape Design Lab, Unversity of Florence),
- Johanna Gibbons and Neil Davidson (Landscape Learn)
A lunch will be prepared by Filippo Saporito (Chef – ‘La Leggenda dei Frati’).
Day 2 – The Arno River (Full day with optional afternoon)
Flood damaged FrescoExploring the delicate relationship between Florence and the River Arno with:
- Gabriele Corsani (Professor of History of Architecture at University of Florence),
- Paolo Capretti (Plant Pathology professor at University of Florence),
- Giovanni Menduni (First Secretary of the River Arno Basin Authority and professor of Hydrology for Flood Risk Evaluation at the Politecnico di Milano),
- Giulia Cavallini (Professor at the Pergola Theatre Laboratory),
- Vinicio Venturi (Artist for Cartavetra),
- Enrico Falqui (Landscape Design Lab Unversity of Florence),
- Johanna Gibbons and Neil Davidson (Landscape Learn)
A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The morning of Day 3 – Giardino Torrigiani (Half day – morning – finishing by 1pm)
Giardino di Boboli wall patinationA walking tour of the largest urban private garden in Europe with:
- A member of the Torrigiani family (owner of the garden),
- Enrico Falqui (Landscape Design Lab University of Florence),
- Johanna Gibbons and Neil Davidson (Landscape Learn)
A farewell aperitif will be provided.
Please note:
- All talks will be in English.
- The itinerary maybe subject to change without prior notification.
- A full itinerary will be provided to all participants.
- Each day will require participants to be outside for much of the day and to be prepared to explore these landscapes on foot.
- A photographer may cover the event and the photographs or video and audio may be used to publicise future Landscape Learn and Landscape Design Lab events or as part of an online archive.
- Landscape Learn and Landscape Design Lab accept no responsibility for the views or opinions expressed by speakers or any other person at the event.
- Participants are required to sign a waiver of liability releasing Landscape Learn and Landscape Design Lab from any damage & personal injury liability while participating in the event.
- Purchasing travel insurance is highly recommended for each participant.
