FoRB Day: Engaging on PSVI and Supporting the Declaration of Humanity

About this Event

As the UK marks Freedom of Religion or Belief Day on 27 October, affirming the need to protect and promote the right to freedom of religion or belief for all, it is crucial to look into FoRB-related issues that continue to be neglected and address them with joint effort.

One neglected issue is violence, including sexual violence, against women and girls in conflict and the abuse of religion or belief to justify violence. Indeed, some recent conflicts have seen an increase in violence against women and girls belonging to religious minority groups, including by Daesh in Syria and Iraq or by the military in Myanmar.  In order to address the issue, the UK Government has been developing the Declaration of Humanity, working with religious and faith leaders on engaging communities and speaking against such violence.

Please join Refcemi, CSW and the UK All-Party ParliamentaryGroup for International Freedom of Religion or Belief for an event which will explore some of these issues. The speakers will discuss some recent cases of violence against religious minority women and girls and the needed responses, including, how the Declaration of Humanity can play a role in responding to the issue.

Speakers include:

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict and Minister of State (Minister for South Asia and the Commonwealth)

Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London, Director of Refcemi

Baroness Cox, UK House of Lords

Lord Alton of Liverpool, UK House of Lords

Mervyn Thomas, CSW
