Every September, we run a week of action to celebrate what an accessible home can do for a person's wellbeing, independence and overall quality of life called Accessible Homes Week (AHW).
October 2025 marks a decade since the introduction of M4(2) accessible and adaptable dwellings and M4(3) wheelchair user dwellings standards into building regulations Part M. So - as part of AHW - we’re marking this anniversary with a webinar to discuss our latest forecast for accessible homes report, and to ask have we hit a milestone or a millstone?
By analysing policies set out in 311 local plans in England, we’ve constructed a forecast for the number of new homes that are planned to meet accessible housing standards over the next 10 years. Early results reveal that there is still no equality for disabled and older people seeking suitable accessible homes.
Overall, the North East region still offers the least in plans for its disabled population, with just one new accessible home of any kind proposed per 156 residents over the next 10 years, compared to Greater London where there is one new accessible home planned for every 21 citizens.
Join Christina McGill, Habinteg’s Director of Social Impact & External Affairs, and our expert panel to hear the highlights of our 2025 Forecast, perspectives from real world developments and projects, insights on delivering inclusive design and accessibility, and the panel’s personal experiences.
