Event description

Description

As part of its 2019 AGM, the Women's Classical Committee is delighted to invite you to a public lecture delivered by Professor Susan Deacy (Roehampton University), titled 'Foremothers: bringing it all back home.. The talk takes place at 5.30pm on 10th May 2019 at Cardiff University.

People of any gender expression or identity who support the WCC’s aims are welcome to attend this event; further details are available at our About Us page.

Abstract

In this talk, for which I return to my hometown, I shall reflect on foremothers who have inspired me, including those whose work I first read in the - then - Central Lending Library in Cardiff. These foremothers, who helped me think that my dream of turning a love of classics could be something I might keep on pursuing, are mostly from beyond the UK and from beyond classics (including the scripture teacher at my secondary school under whose guidance I started to immerse myself in ancient texts). Prompted by this recognition, and exploring some of the metaphors which inform this year's AGM, and as someone once described by another kind of foremother as 'educationally disadvantaged,' I shall discuss how I have kept going for several decades, trying to get through the door and trying to make a ladder for others. I shall use my experience as a ‘daughter’ to reflect on issues pertinent to the Women’s Classical Committee including who gets to access a classical education, what a ‘classical education’ is, or could be, and what support there can be between academic ‘mothers’ and their ‘children.’

Child-friendly Policy

The Women's Classical Committee is committed to making our events as inclusive as possible, and recognises that the financial and practical challenges of childcare often impede people from participating in workshops and conferences. Anyone who needs to bring a dependent child or children with them in order to participate in one of our events is usually welcome to do so, but we ask you to inform us of this in advance so that we can take them into account in our event planning and risk assessment.

Attendees who wish to bring children are welcome to do so; the safety and well-being of children remains their carers’ responsibility at all times.
