Event description
BEETHOVEN Overture Leonore No 3 STRAUSS Wind Serenade BRAHMS Symphony No 3 Conductor: Mark Shanahan

About this event

The concert opens with Beethoven’s Overture Leonore No 3, written for the 1806 revised version of his one and only opera. The overture invites listeners into his heroine’s world of sacrifice and heroic action.

Our woodwind and horn sections are highlighted in the second work, Strauss’s early Wind Serenade for 13 players, with its lyrical richness and wonderful range of contrasting textures.

The concert ends with Brahms’s Third Symphony, composed in 1883, and offered as a gesture of reconciliation to his old friend Joseph Joachim. Brahms uses his personal motto ‘Frei aber Froh’ (free but happy), represented by the notes F – A – F, as the starting point and underlying motif for the whole work. Despite the heroic tone and complex struggles of the outer movements, all four parts of this symphony end quietly.

The event will adhere to UK government guidance around Covid in place at the time of the concert.

We will offer a full refund if the event is unable to take place due to increased Covid restrictions.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Mark ShanahanForest Philharmonic Orchestra has gained an impressive reputation for the high quality and vitality of its performances. The string sections are each led by a professional player, whose input in rehearsals enables the orchestra to fulfil its aim of coaching the musicians of tomorrow while providing a forum for the leading amateur players of today. Young musicians in the local Waltham Forest community are given the opportunity to experience a full-size symphony orchestra during open rehearsals, and creative projects are undertaken in local schools, introducing classical music to pupils. In 2014/15, Forest Philharmonic celebrated its 50th anniversary season!
