Event description

Description

Forgotten Fiction is a monthly book club where we travel back in time to rediscover 'lost' literary gems of the 20th Century. Hosted by Elizabeth Morris on the last Wednesday of the month, each session is curated around a specific theme, and features carefully chosen books to provide the basis for our discussion.

Our final Club of the 2019 will explore the ‘Double Standards’ of 1950s suburbia with Alix Kates Shulman's landmark 1972 novel Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen. This cult classic defined a generation and was recently republished in the UK by Profile Books for the first time in 47 years. Following Prom Queen Sasha Davis 's coming of age through the sexual double standards, job discrimination and harassment; five decades later, it remains a funny and heart-breaking story of a young woman in a man's world.

As always, our brand of discussion is light-hearted, informal & non-academic, and our journey will be fuelled by gin-and-tonics served in jam jars.

Tickets are £8 / £6 Plus cardholders & students, and include a G&T. Books for the following month’s club will be on sale.
