Event description
"Climate Breakdown Shakedown" Environmental Crisis Discussion Group meeting

About this Event

Bad news is coming in thick and fast about climate change: the fires in the Amazon rain forest ... the record-breaking summer heat waves ... melting ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. How do we process this information? What will happen next, over what timescale? How accurate, or inaccurate, is the information from governments and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? And, most important, what can we all do about it? For one thing, we need to find ways of educating ourselves, and that is the idea of this study group.

Fossil fuel use and how to stop it:

To stop dangerous climate change, the use of fossil fuels has to be slashed, and quickly. Doing that will not be easy. These fuels are used throughout the economy in many different ways. And there are powerful vested interests that profit from keeping things that way. We will discuss the ways out of this, and what social movements can do about it. Dario Kenner (author of Carbon Inequality) and Simon Pirani (author of Burning Up: a Global History of Fossil Fuel Consumption) will open the discussion. All are welcome - no previous knowledge necessary.
