Preparing educators to meet the challenges of generative AI in the classroom
As gen-ai (generative artificial intelligence) continues to receive ongoing attention in education and the media more broadly, it is increasingly important for educators to feel prepared to meet the challenges and possibilities of this emerging technology. In the workshop, we will discuss how gen-ai works, and we will also explore some of the challenges and practicalities of this technology for the classroom. Insights from the ESRC project Teaching Digital Citizenship: Data Ethics in the Classroom and Beyond will help ground the discussion in the experiences of pupils and teachers in schools in England and Scotland. All participants will leave with examples of how gen-ai could work within their schools, while reflecting on how they can shape the outcomes.
The workshop is mainly targeted to teachers or trainee teachers who work with pupils in P5 - S3.
The workshop will consist of three parts:
- An introduction to generative AI, incluing some of the ethical, environmental, and pedagogical concerns.
- A workshop that aims to provoke reflection on various possible uses of generative AI
- A discussion of the possibilities and challenges, including new questions to consider
Light refreshments will be served, with vegan and gluten free options
