Overview

Thinking about fostering? Join our info event to hear real stories, meet the team and explore how you could change a child’s life.

Are you curious about fostering and want to learn more? Come along to our friendly information event and discover how you could support children and young people in South Gloucestershire.

You’ll hear from Mel, one of our experienced foster carers, who shares her inspiring journey. Mel has always worked with children as a nanny, nursery nurse and childminder. After raising her own family and working for Royal Mail for 20 years, she and her husband Mark decided it was time to take the next step.

“When our children grew up and became more independent, we felt ready to foster. It was something I’d always wanted to do.”

With support from their children, Mel and Mark completed their training and welcomed their first foster child a two-year-old boy who struggled to express emotions. Within minutes of arriving, he was smiling. After eight months, he left as a confident and happy three-year-old to live with his aunt.

“We cried when he left, just like we do with every child. But knowing we helped him thrive makes it all worthwhile.”

Since then, Mel and Mark have fostered several children, including Ivy, who arrived at just four days old. In May 2024, they adopted her.

“Adopting Ivy has been our most memorable moment. She’s now a joyful three-year-old, and our whole family adores her.”

Their children have embraced fostering too supporting the little ones at home and staying involved as a family.

“They’ve gained a little sister and a deeper understanding of compassion. Our wider family is incredibly supportive too.”

Mel speaks highly of the support she’s received from South Gloucestershire Council.

“The training, events, coffee mornings and the Mockingbird programme have helped us build friendships and find advice when we need it. Our Supervising Social Worker has been amazing always there when we need guidance.”

Fostering has brought joy and purpose to their lives.

“Some children arrive scared and unsure, but watching them grow into confident, happy individuals is the most rewarding part. We treat every child like family.”

Mel encourages anyone thinking about fostering to take that first step.

“You don’t need to be perfect just patient, caring and willing to learn. It’s hard work at times, but it’s the best job in the world.”

At the event, you’ll also have the chance to meet our fostering team, ask questions, and find out how you could make a lasting difference in a child’s life.

Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re just curious or ready to apply, we’d love to meet you.
