How do I get to The Old Deanery

The Old Deanery is part of the Cathedral Close in Exeter. It's 10 minutes walk from Exeter Central Station, 20 minutes from Exeter St Davids and 15 minutes from the Bus Station. It has three parking spaces for those with access needs, and there are many nearby public car parks.

I'm unable to make one or more of the dates. Does that matter?

Because this course has no written assessments, the commitment we ask for is through full attendance. If dates are a problem, there will be other cohorts that you can join. If you have specific requests (ie travel and transport are serious obstacles), you can email - jon.curtis@exeter.anglican.org

Why isn't Foundations coming near to me?

We are aiming to move Foundations around the county as much as possible, but it is unlikely to come to every town. If you believe that your travel time is insurmountable, please do let us know - jon.curtis@exeter.anglican.org

Do I have to take this course if I want to become Ordained, an LLM or Commissioned in a role?

Yes, we're asking that everyone wanting to move into these roles undertakes Foundations

Will there be refreshments?

Yes. Tea, coffee, water and snacks will be available. We'll make sure there are vegan and gluten free options.

What about if I already have a degree in Theology or have taken a comparitive course?

This course specifically focusses on ministry so may well include elements that have not been included in a University course. However, you can apply to move directly to the next stage by emailing jon.curtis@exeter.anglican.org - the decision will be made by a board of study.

What equipment do I need to access the online materials?

You only need internet access and a smart phone or tablet.

Does completing this course mean that I am now Licensed?

Accepted Answer

No, this is only the foundational part of a programme of study. Any additional stages will require interviews and references for lay people, and the broader discernment process for those looking to be ordained.

Why do I need to be part of a church to take part in Foundations?

Foundations is not just about learning about the Bible, theology and spirituality but about how this learning shapes your discipleship and ministry within the life of your church. Your church will also support you as you grow through Foundations.

Do I have to be a member of an Anglican Church? Do I need to live in Devon?

Accepted Answer

No, this course is open to anyone who is part of a church within Devon. If you live in Cornwall, Somerset or Dorset but attend a Devon church, that's ok. The Dioceses of Truro, Salisbury and Bath & Wells run similar courses if you worship in one of those counties/Dioceses.

There will be three Saturdays 10am - 4pm and 4 evenings 7pm-9pm.

I'm not sure that I want to be an LLM or Ordained - can I still be a part of the course?

Yes! A big part of this course is exploring our sense of call in whatever we do, whether doing our jobs, being a neighbour or supporting the ministry of the church.

Everyone who attends the whole course receives a certificate.
