Fundraising is more important than ever right now and competition for funds is fierce. This short course aims to provide you with the tools to support your museums to generate funding from new sources, as well as build on those you already have. It is a practical session with space to ask questions and discuss the most effective ways to grow income for your museums, with a focus on making sure that there is a strong basis to build meaningful relationships with funders and supporters that deliver long-term benefit.
As the session is aimed at Trustees who wish to support their museums’ fundraising efforts, it includes specific advice regarding governance responsibilities with regards to generating funds as outlined by the Charity Commission.
You will cover:
- The context of fundraising
- Sources of funding available to museums, and places to find them
- Trustee responsibilities
- How to make the ask
- Planning for fundraising
Trainer: David Johnson - Cause4 - Director of Strategy and Programmes
David works across the cultural sector and closely with a number of museum and heritage sites across the country. Prior to this role David was Head of Development at the Albany, an arts centre in South East London and was responsible for earned and raised income generation, partnership development and contract management. During his tenure the Albany more than doubled its turnover.
Prior to this, he worked in the Cultural Development team for the London Borough of Hackney, supporting the development of 2012 Cultural Olympiad projects and producing the borough’s youth arts festival – Discover Young Hackney; and as Company Manager for outdoor arts organisation, Emergency Exit Arts. He sits on the board of Babylon Arts in Ely and is a member of the Institute of Fundraising.

By booking a place on to SHARE Museums East Training Programme, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:
- That you are from an East of England museum which is in Arts Council England’s Museum Accreditation Scheme. Where this is not applicable you acknowledge that SHARE will facilitate your attendance if availability permits and that your organisation will pay any fees which may apply.
- It is a condition of receiving this ACE funded training that the online evaluation sent to the email address provided at the point of booking is completed by the specified deadline. This deadline is in the email notification unless a paper evaluation is specifically requested and submitted on the day of the training session.
- By booking a place you agree that you are booking as a representative of your organisation and should you cancel your booking without sufficient notice your organisation is responsible for paying the late cancellation fee of £50.
