Event description

Description

Our relationship with the ocean is undergoing a profound transformation. Whereas just fifty years ago most of what we ate from the sea was wild, the post-war expansion of commercial fishing combined with an unprecedented biotech revolution has brought us to a point where wild and farmed fish occupy equal parts of a complex and confusing marketplace.

We now stand on the edge of an epic choice: should we keep fishing as we have done for millennia, hoping we can find a balance with natural systems? Or should we, as Jacques Cousteau advised, "plant the sea and herd its animals, using the sea as farmers instead of as hunters"?

As part of the University of York's Open Lecture Series, you will be able to hear New York Times bestselling author Paul Greenberg weigh up the options and propose some ideas for the future of humankind and seafood.
