Description

Wednesdays 18 October – 8 November 2017, 11am – 1.30pm

This four-week course will explore the history of painting in Spain from the late sixteenth to early eighteenth centuries by focusing on four of the greatest artists who worked there. El Greco was not native, but his origins as an Orthodox Icon painter in Crete, and his experience in Italy, before arriving in Toledo, made his impact vital. Murillo brought the religious fervour seen in the older artist’s work to the fore, while Velázquez was as important for his exploration of classical subject matter, of portraiture, and of the nature of art itself. Finally Goya took art from Baroque to Romantic, creating what have been described as the very first ‘modern’ paintings. While looking mainly at these four masters, we will also consider their contemporaries.

This course is taught by Dr. Richard Stemp.
