Event description
Science-Fiction and Beyond. FPGs reading group inspired by the new exhibition, 'To Dream Effectively'.

About this Event

Set in the 2020s, Octavia Butler's 'Parable of the Sower' explores the aftermath of capitalism's collapse and climate change. After she is forced to flee her gated village, hyper-empath Lauren Oya Olamina sets out to spread the gospel of 'Earthseed' — a belief system orientated towards the eventual re-settlement of humanity amongst the stars. With its emphasis on the constant nature of Change and the dialectical relationship between humans and nature, Earthseed offers a utopian vision for humanity's survival as Lauren and her followers grapple with the realities of societal breakdown.

Attendees should read the text in advance of the reading group.

These events are free to attend and open to all, however advance booking is essential. We have been working closely with our colleagues at Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to ensure that the gallery spaces are safe.

These events are limited to 5 attendees to ensure we can safely socially distance. Please do bring your mask, if you do not have a mask we can provide one. You will not have to wear your mask once seated for the reading group, but you will need it to move around the space or access the toilets.
