This Framing Data and Causation session will support participants to explore ways to frame statistics and analysis when communicating about care experience to change the narrative. It will use insights from our body of research on care experience here in Scotland, as well as research on poverty. The session will explore:

How does the public respond to ‘unframed’ statistics and analysis?

What is motivated numeracy, and how can we navigate it?

A deeper dive into the role of explanation and causation

How can we make sure our data tells the story we want it to?

This is an interactive session and an opportunity to reflect on your own area of work. In advance of the session, please think about the different ways in which you use stats and analysis to communicate a message. Please bring some facts and figures from your own material for you to use.

Who is this session for?

This session is for people working in (or with an interest in): policy, evaluation, analysis, research (or those who support communications in these areas). This list is not exhaustive – if you think this session would be useful for your work, please do come along!

Workshop details

There will be a maximum of 30 people at this session. The session will be delivered over Zoom and will last 2hours with a break. The session will be run by Tamsyn Hyatt (FrameWorks UK), Claire O’Hara and Michael Wield (Each and Every Child).

This session is part of the Each and Every Child Framing Care Experience series of workshops. These additional sessions build on the information and techniques discussed in the Introduction to Framing and Framing Care Experience. The sessions will give participants an opportunity to explore practically how the framing techniques can be used in different areas of focus. It will also be an opportunity to meet other participants, and to begin to form a community of framers across Scotland.
