Description

Prisons and probation: a suitable case for treatment

The Centre for Criminal Justice Studies is delighted to welcome Frances Crook OBE, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, to give its Annual Public Lecture this year.

The Howard League for Penal Reform is the oldest penal reform charity in the UK. It was established in 1866 and is named after John Howard, one of the first prison reformers. It works with parliament and the media, with criminal justice professionals, students and members of the public, influencing debate and forcing through meaningful change to create less crime, safer communities and fewer people in prison.

The Howard League for Penal Reform campaigns on a wide range of issues. Recent programmes have focused on transforming prisons, reducing child arrests, promoting real work in custody, and ending the criminalisation of children in residential care. It uses its legal work to transform and shape the law for children and young people.

Appointed in 1986, Frances Crook has been responsible for research programmes and campaigns to raise public concern about suicides in prison, the over-use of custody, poor conditions in prison, young people in trouble, and mothers in prison. She writes articles for the national media and does interviews on radio and television. She was awarded an OBE for services to youth justice in the 2010 New Year Honours List. She was appointed a Senior Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics in 2010. She has been appointed an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the Department of Criminology at Leicester University in 2014.
