Are you active in your community or want to be? Join us for a series of online workshops with other Newham residents!

About this Event

Taught by tutors from Birkbeck, University of London, who have run Community Development and Leadership courses in London for over 10 years, these workshops aim to help participants gain skills, knowledge and confidence.

The course is made up of 5 sessions taking place weekly from the 6th May 2021 and will be made up of a mixture of live online workshops and videos.

  • Project Development; Thursday 13th May
  • Community Leadership; Thursday 20th May
  • Health, Wellbeing and Resilience; Thursday 27th May
  • Continuing Your Learning; Thursday 3rd June

We recommend participants attend all five sessions. Participants that attend four or more workshops will receive a certificate of participation from Birkbeck, University of London. For more detail on each of the sessions and a video introduction to the course, scroll down.

BSL interpretation and captions will be available on video content. A BSL interpreter is available to attend all live sessions. Please indicate if you will use a BSL interpreter when registering (we will need to know by the 12th April at the latest).

Who can take part?

This free online 5 week programme is for those with an interest in community leadership and development, who would like to come together to learn and share practice with like-minded Newham residents.

The course consists of 4 recorded webinars and 5 live online discussions which take place weekly. You will be able to select which session you would like to attend at registration.

You do not need any particular qualifications or experience to take part, but a curious mind and an interest in community development within Newham is a great start!

The programme covers the following:

Week 1: Community Engagement

Thursday 6th May, 6-8pm

In this first session, we will explore ways to engage local residents in your project. Recruiting volunteers and getting people interested and involved will be explored, as well as developing effective communications to get key individuals and Service Providers on board.

Week 2: Project Development

Thursday 13th May, 6-8pm

During the 2nd session, we will cover the different aspects of designing and delivering community projects, including identifying needs, developing clear aims and objectives, recruiting volunteers, fundraising and assessing impact.

Week 3: Community Leadership Styles and Skills

Thursday 20th May, 6-8pm

This session will focus on the different skills, styles and ideas of leadership and how these link to community settings, for example in building relationships and understanding local needs. Participants will be able to reflect on their own practice and styles and how to be more effective leaders.

Week 4: Health, Wellbeing and Resilience

Thursday 27th May, 6-8pm

Policy makers and service providers often talk about building local wellbeing and resilience, but what does this mean in practice? We will explore the latest research about increasing personal and community wellbeing and look at some case studies to help reflect how your project fits with this popular agenda. Specific issues relevant to Newham will be addressed.

Week 5: Continuing Your Learning

Thursday 3rd June, 6-8pm

The last live online discussion will give you the opportunity to reflect on what you have learnt during the course, explore your future study options and finish with some ideas for next steps and how to take your learning journey to the next level!

How do I take part in this programme?

  • Booking a place will allow you to indicate which sessions you would like to attend.
  • Each week, we'll send you the webinar to watch in your own time.
  • The online discussion groups will take place live on the dates and times listed above, and you'll need to log in using the link we send you with the webinar video. There is no need to register for the software, it will just ask you for your name.

The online discussion will be a chance to speak to others, talk about your own ideas and opinions based on what you have watched and heard during the webinars and ask any questions about the content.

What if I'm not confident with digital technology or don't have a computer?

We understand that it can be daunting to learn online especially if it's something you haven't done before. You might also have worries about how it fits in with other commitments or whether you have the right technology to take part.

All the content we share including the live sessions are accessible via smart phone.

We also offer additional support including the chance to be linked up with a digital mentor who can walk you through how to take part in the live session. Please tell us about any worries you have about accessing course content when you fill out the sign up form.

Please log on 10-15 minutes before each weekly session to make sure there are no technical issues with your connection. We will also arrange an opportunity for you to practise using the software before the programme starts, for those who would like that additional assistance.
