About this event
FREE Epilepsy Awareness, mental health & wellbeing for schools
Epilepsy Action are holding an Epilepsy Awareness session with a focus on mental health and well-being for schools in Wales.
Around one person in 90 has epilepsy – that’s over 36,000 in Wales. It affects everyone in different ways, so it can be difficult to control and challenging to live with. Epilepsy is the most common long term neurological condition of childhood. Children and young people with epilepsy often face various challenges, including an increased risk of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depressive disorders.
Epilepsy Action’s family support and counselling service are offering a free exclusive online course for schools in Wales. This course provides epilepsy awareness training and invaluable insights into how to support students' mental health and overall well-being. Aimed at school leaders, teachers and staff responsible for special educational needs/additional learning needs. It may also be useful for teaching assistants working directly with children with epilepsy. A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of this course.
This course will include:
- Essential facts and figures about epilepsy
- What to do if a pupil has a seizure at school
- Insight into the specific issues affecting children and young people with epilepsy
- What to include in an individual healthcare plan (IHP) and school medical conditions policy
- How epilepsy can affect learning, behaviour and mental health and wellbeing
- Tips for fostering a safe and inclusive environment for pupils with epilepsy
