Event description

Description

All those who are interested in the education of students learning through English as an Additional Language (EAL) are welcome at these meetings.

Whether you are an EAL leader, a teacher, a TA, a headteacher, a governor or a parent/carer, please come along to share your perspectives and ideas and to learn from others interested in EAL.

This secondary-focussed network meeting will include:

1. Discussions about oracy in schools, including the use of home languages.

  • How can oracy enhance attainment, promote well-being and support social mobility for our EAL pupils?
  • How well is speaking and listening planned for within teaching and learning in your school?’

2. Reflections on collecting EAL data for the January 2018 DfE Census return.

  • How did it go?
  • What next for Band A-E EAL learners in your school?
  • What good practice can you share re your school’s EAL data collection procedures?

3. EAL funding – what’s available and how can we think creatively about funding EAL provision?

We are delighted to announce that we also have a guest speaker!

Kamil Trzebiatowski, a well-respected EAL speaker and secondary school teacher from Hull, will speak about the urgent need for all secondary school teachers (mainstream and EAL specialists) to be aware of the basics of grammar as currently required in the primary years in order to be able to continue to support all learners in the development of grammar. Given that cognitive awareness and certain aspects of grammar in L1 support the development of L2, Kamil will share some of the ideas, resources and examples of the use of L1 with EAL learners from his own Kingston-upon-Hull classroom.
