Ousmane Sembène's Mandabi (1968) is more than a film, it is a revelation. Shot in rich, sun-drenched colour, it was the first feature ever made in an African language, Wolof, grounding cinema in the rhythms, humor and struggles of everyday Senegalese life. The story seems deceptively simple: a man receives a money order from his nephew in France, only to find himself trapped in a maze of bureaucracy, poverty, and social expectation. Yet through this portrait Sembène crafts a biting satire of colonial legacies and the fragile dignity of the common man.
