Planning for the new Maths A-level - key changes in the curriculum
This practical session will focus on some the issues that teachers will have to consider as they they plan for the new linear A-level. Topics will include:
Using technology to explore a large dataset: concepts such as confidence intervals were formerly in the more advanced statistic modules are now part of the compulsory A-level curriculum. We will be looking at how to use Excel and Geogebra to to make these important ideas more accessible to students
Calculus from first principles: as well as being able to differentiate a function, from next year students will be expected to show an understanding of how this can be done using the concept of a limit. This is one of the most fundamental concepts in undergraduate mathematics and we will be looking at how it can be introduced in the A-level classroom.
New style examination questions: we will be sharing examples of the less structured questions that will distinguish the new examinations from the old modular papers. All attendees will leave with a set of resources to work through with their colleagues as they plan for the coming year
