Description

Snowdrops, Sustainability and Universal Credit Support.

The forum will be taking place during The Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival, an annual community event that celebrates the life and works of James Allen. The festival is the initiative of the Shepton Mallet Horticultural Society, and Chrisi Kennedy, Treasurer and Fund Raiser, will tell us about the history of James Allen, and the philosophy and ambitions of the Festival Committee.

We will be joined by Stewart Crocker who is currently a member of the leadership team of Sustainable Wells. It's aim is to promote practical solutions to accelerate the pace of change towards a sustainable future. They believe that one factor which currently constrains the impact of their work - as with so many community organizations – is the tendency to work in relative isolation. In order to address this, their aim is to stimulate the creation of a network of like-minded organisations, which could become a cohesive movement for change. To kick this off they are collaborating with a multi-talented group of people to create an event in Wells on 23rd June 2018. Stewart will tell us more about their plan to create this network and database that would be accessible by all participants, in order to enable continuing collaboration and self-empowerment.

There will also be the opportunity to find our more about Universal Credit, the new benefit for working age people in Somerset that replaces Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance (IB), Employment Support Allowance (IB), Child and Working Tax credit and Housing Benefit. Lucy Martin, Partnership Manager at the Somerset Department for Work and Pensions, will tell us about the support available for more vulnerable customers, and give insight into how they can be supported by other professionals.

After the Forum Chrisi will lead a walk to the Market Square and point out places of interest on the way. You’ll then be free to explore the festival and enjoy the poetry and photographic exhibits and arts and crafts, see the beautiful snowdrops and maybe even buy a snowdrop themed memento.

We hope to see you there!
