Free Course: Train to become a mental health first aider

About this Event

Our 1 -4 Campaign

Our Aim is simple to raise awareness in East London around Mental Health and carry on the work of reducing sigma , and to provide a safe space for people to go when the are in a crisis, to do this we need to train people in Mental Health First Aid.

We do not receive any funding for this protect and the tutor is delivering this class as a Volunteer.

Our target is to train 1000 people in East London before the end of July 2020, we have selected dates thought the year.

Our Volunteers will provide you with information, advice and guidance, and give piratical advice and support, they will carry out a full health and well-being checklist and provide you with your own action plan.

What will i gain:

You will gain our Sunlight Crisis Center Certificate with CPD points free of charge, however if you would like the Qualification, you would need to attend a top up session, and pay a fee of £30.00 to cover the cost of your certificate from ProQuals; find out more here

What you will learn, one the day,

​Mental Health First Aid Awareness Learning Outcome

1 Understand what is meant by mental health1.1 Identify what is meant by the terms mental health and well being1.2 Describe the aims of mental health first aid1.3 Describe how the actions of others can negatively affect individuals with a mental health condition1.4 Identify what is meant by the mental health continuum

2 Understand common mental health conditions2.1 Identify the main signs and symptoms of mental health disorders/crises/problems including: - depression - substance misuse - addiction - anxiety disorders, including stress, phobias - post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - self harm - suicide - eating disorders - personality disorders - psychotic disorders2.2 Identify risk factors for the mental health disorders/crises/ problems listed above

3 Understand the role of the mental health first aider

3.1 Identify the skills and strengths of a mental health first aider3.2 Identify common treatments and/or interventions for managing mental ill health3.3 Identify how the mental health first aider can support individuals showing signs or symptoms of mental health disorders or problems3.4 Identify sources of reliable information, support and guidance for mental health first aiders3.5 Identify examples of strategies that can reduce the risk of mental health issues arising

Why should i do this course?

In 2018, there were 6,507 suicides registered in the UK, an age-standardised rate of 11.2 deaths per 100,000 population; the latest rate is significantly higher than that in 2017 and represents the first increase since 2013.

20% of adolescents may experience a mental health problem in any given year

50% of mental health problems are established by the age of 14 and 75% by the age 24.2

10% of children and young people (aged 5-16) have a clinically diagnisable mental health problem and yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate intentions at a sufficiently age.

One in four people in the world will be affected by Mental or neurological disorders at some point in their life, around 450 million people currently have such conditions, Making Mental health disorders the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide
