About this event
Portland walk for oldies
After meeting at Easton Square Garden OR our starting point at Portland Museum - where you will be encouraged to make a donation - we will follow the South West Coastal Path north, from the setting of Thomas Hardy's The Well-Beloved to the once harsh Portland Prison and to see the old coastal defences.
Your guides, Mark Williams and Tony Webb, were both raised on the island and will gently unravel the long history of Portland, from Roman times through its famous Portland Stone, to the present day, and we will point out the abundant wildlife and wild flowers en route.
You will need a day pack with plenty of water, and to have good training shoes or, better, walking boots. Although the walk is gentle, there are some steeper, rocky sections, so we cannot accommodate anyone with mobility issues. We strongly recommend using our bus services to get to Portland. Frequently asked questions
Yes, a well-behaved, non-reactive dog is welcome though bear in mind other dogs may be on the walk!
Stout boots are helpful but not required. But please wear strong training shoes as a minimum.
Please bring plenty of water with you, maybe a sticking plaster for any blisters, sunglasses, and a small donation (we suggest £5) for Portland Museum. We will pass a cafe en route and have a short stop there, if required, and the walk ends at another cafe. Binoculars and a camera are useful, too.
House-trained, for sure, but no, we are local volunteers, self-taught and experienced walkers with a moderate knowledge of the island
Yes, either along the roadside of Pennsylvania Road, or the small car park signposted opposite Pennsylvania Castle gates. However, this parking fills quickly in summer. If you drive, we suggest parking at Tesco, near Easton Square (DT5 2FG on a sat nav), and meet in Easton Square Garden
No. Although we will be high above sea level, the paths are well away from the cliff edge.
Check the forecast. If it looks like rain, yes.
