FREE SEMINAR: OUR CITY - MIGRANTS & THE MAKING OF MODERN BIRMINGHAM
Tuesday 24th April 2018 12pm – 2.30pm
Uffculme Centre, 52 Queensbridge Rd, B13 8QY
This seminar will explore how one of Britain’s major cities has been transformed by its migrant population – and the implications for NHS staff as well as service users.
Presenter – Jon Bloomfield
Jon Bloomfield is author of new book “Our City – Migrants and the Making of Modern Birmingham”. He interviewed fifty migrants to Birmingham from all walks of life: a mix of first and second generation; men and women; from Ireland to India, Pakistan to Poland, and the Caribbean to Somalia. Jon is an Honorary Research Fellow at University of Birmingham, and was the former European Policy Lead in Birmingham City Council
Jon will share his insights from writing the book and participants are encouraged to contribute to an honest and lively discussion. The current Brexit debate, as well as the 50th anniversary of Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of Blood” speech on migration makes this seminar timely, interesting and highly significant.
The seminar is part of a series of seminars organised by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. For more information please contact salma.yaqoob@nhs.net .
