Staylistening

We are sometimes at a loss about what to do in the face of big feelings from our children. We may know we don’t want to punish or shut our children down when they are upset - like we perhaps were as children - but we don’t often have an easy time figuring out how to respond to their behaviours, wants and needs when they are having their most emotional moments.

Staylistening is a tool you can use with your children for many ‘big-blast’ emotional states—tantrums, grief, fear, even anger with the desire to hit or bite.

It’s good to remember that experiencing intense emotion takes neurobiological precedence over thinking about that emotion. In other words, it’s hard to think and feel at the same time.

Come along to learn and practise responding to your child’s emotional moments in a way that allows you both to think and feel, and leads to connection rather than disconnection.

Connecting with children when they express their emotional experience can support the essential elements of the parent-child relationship. It’s an opportunity for connection, attunement and emotional closeness and can support a parent-child relationship for life.

Whether you are brand new to this approach, or have been experimenting with it at home for some time, come along to share your experience and questions.

We look forward to seeing you there.
