Event description

Description

Professor Paul Hoggett, Emeritus Professor of Social Policy and Former Director of the Centre for Psycho-Social Studies at the University of the West of England and chair of the Climate Psychology Alliance will be sharing his expertise in relation to Behaviour Change when applied to the climate change conversation.

He will focus on 3 main themes:

1. varieties of climate change denial - hard, soft, institutionalised: hard denial - we thought we’d cracked this one until the rise of the new right; soft denial - remains the key problem, people accept the facts but remain unmoved and unmotivated; institutional denial - we interviewed climate scientists and found that they felt many of their colleagues colluded with policy makers

2. the dilemmas of behaviour change: the self is not homogenous but always in tension and conflict, we feel pushed and pulled in different directions by our desires, values, loyalties and cognitions; this affects how we respond to climate change

3. talking about climate change: some of the do’s and don’ts of talking about climate change to friends, colleagues, etc.

There will be an opportunity for questions at the end. The event is hosted by Bedminster Energy Group. In an effort to save resources, please do not print off your ticket.
