Information about the Service

The Lishman Unit is commissioned by NHS England to deliver specialist neuropsychiatry services that provide assessment, investigation and treatment for patients with neuropsychiatric conditions. These may be neurological conditions that cause psychiatric symptoms, or physical symptoms without a medical cause where a combined physical and psychological approach is required.

Neuropsychiatry services work closely with other clinical neuroscience and mental health services. Neuropsychiatry services see a range of patients as follows:

  • Patients with neurological conditions (such as movement disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders such as tic disorders, epilepsy, and sleep disorders) where there are also significant psychiatric, cognitive, or behavioural symptoms. Examples would include patients with Parkinson’s disease and psychosis, or patients with young onset dementia including Huntington’s disease.

  • Patients with acquired brain injury (for example following head injury).

  • Patients with functional neurological disorder (also known as conversion disorder), in whom there are severe physical symptoms and disability without any identifiable medical cause.

  • The unit takes referrals from all over the UK and one of only a small number of such units in the country.
