Event description

Description

Saturday September 23rd 2017

10.00AM - 5.00PM

Central Glasgow

The Scottish Centre for Personal Safety, Scottish Trans Alliance, and Strathclyde LGBT+ are pleased to be co-organising a trans personal safety course.

This course is open to all trans people in Scotland (at Scottish Trans Alliance we use trans as an inclusive umbrella term for all people whose gender identity or gender expression does not fuly correspond with their sex assigned at birth, including trans men, trans women, non-binary people and cross-dressing people).

The course will be run by trainers from the Scottish Centre for Personal Safety, who have all received trans awareness training from Scottish Trans Alliance. There will be a member of staff attending from the Scottish Trans Alliance on the day as well.

Information about the course:

Our full day Personal Safety course includes tips and advice on how to stay safe when out and about, when socialising and when using public transport.

We also discuss the warning signs and danger signs displayed by an attacker prior to an attack; de-esculating techniques; and the law regarding self defence.

During the practical self defence session, we will show you how to escape from a basic wrist or clothing grab; strangle holds; a full frontal attack; a back attack; and even ground attacks.

It's up to YOU how much you take part in but the more you experience, the safer and more confident you will become.

We suggest you wear loose clothing (T-shirt and trousers / exercise pants - but not skirts as there will be some rolling about on the floor). Footwear such as trainers is ideal but slip-on shoes / flip flops / open toed shoes are not good as there will be an element of kicking involved.

It's YOUR course so we cover what YOU want.

Accessibility:

We will be showing participants how to escape from a front attack, back attack (where you may be pulled to the ground) and ground attack therefore participants must be able to comfortably move from a standing position to a ground position and back again.

This particular course is not suitable for wheelchair users.

If you require a BSL interpreter, please tell us when you register.

Any medical conditions such as pregnancy, neck / back injuries, impaired vision / hearing, etc. should be notified to the trainers on the day.

The course will take part at the University of Strathclyde Student Union, which is a five minute walk from Queen Street Station. You can see a map of the route here: http://bit.ly/2voIqwp The room where the course is happening can be reached by lift from the ground floor.

There will be gender neutral toilets, and accessible toilets, available in the building where the course is taking place. Both of these can be reached by lift from the room where the course is happening.

The course will run for nearly the whole day (10AM-5PM) but we will be unable to provide lunch - please bring something along with you or some money to buy something during the break.

Code of conduct:

We ask you to help us to ensure the day is really enjoyable and safe for everyone attending. Lots of people who are attending may not know anyone else at the course, so please be kind and welcoming to everyone. Remember that as this is an event for all of the trans community, there are likely to be lots of attendees who use various different pronouns – so please ask people if you aren’t sure of their pronouns and don’t make assumptions!

You can find the code of conduct for our events at: http://www.scottishtrans.org/code-of-conduct/ - by attending this event, we expect you to follow this code of conduct throughout the day.
