This course is designed for avid cyclists who already have experience with bike maintenance and repairs. This course is particularly suitable for those who are looking to work or volunteer as a bike mechanic.

This course is certified by Cycling UK and is approximately equivalent to Cytech Level 1. This is a hands-on two full days course. You’ll be working on your own bike, getting your hands dirty and learning by doing.

This Advanced Bike Maintenance course includes:

  • Personal safety, tool and chemical handling
  • Cleaning: degreasing and general lubrication
  • Safety check (M-check)
  • Brakes: cable and pad replacement, caliper adjustment
  • Gears: cable replacement, lubrication, mech removal, replacement and positioning, indexing
  • Transmission: chain set, pedal, chain ring and bottom bracket removal and replacement
  • Transmission: cassette and free hub removal and replacement
  • Headset: strip, lube and refit
  • Wheels: trailside wheel truing; hub servicing, disc removal and replacement
  • Tyres and tubes: puncture prevention and repair
  • Lubrication: all items stripped and replaced through the course
  • Wear and tear: managing your bike and extending component life

The bike will be remaining at the centre overnight so please ensure you have a way of getting home and to the course the next day.

Please note: as this course is provided for free and would normally cost a significant amount if you do not attend or provide notice of cancellation 48hours in advance then you will not be able to attend future courses and maybe liable for the cost of the course.

This is for participants aged 18+

What prior knowledge do you need?

No prior knowledge, except that you are interested in cycling and wish to use cycling as a means of getting around in your everyday life.

It is, but we ask is that you complete a questionnaire for us.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a packed lunch. You will also need a bike, which you will work on during the course.
