Programme of Taster Activities*

10:15am First set of taster sessions begin (Pick 1):

1. Cartooning Around: History Through Humour
The study of history always involves the analysis of primary sources, and this includes additional materials beyond more conventional written sources. This taster offers a fun introduction to using cartoons for historical analysis, showing how Britain's relationship with Nazi Germany was perceived in the 1930s and the Second World War. This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying Arts & Humanites based subjects.

2. Inequality: Is it Fair?
In this session we will look at how various goods like income, healthcare, education and jobs are distributed unequally across Sheffield. Using maps, data and discussion we will ask ourselves: is it fair? This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying Social Science based subjects.

3. Can good oral hygiene lead to a healthy heart?
In this session we will examine some of the causes of gum disease and other dental problems. We will also consider the effectiveness of a range of public health messages used to promote good oral hygiene amongst adults and children. This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying Science based subjects.

11:30am Second set of taster sessions begin (Pick 1):

1. Thinking Through Things: How to Interpret Objects
This taster teaches you how to interpret different kinds of objects and understand what they tell us about the societies and cultures they come from. You will have the choice of learning about local objects from Sheffield and the surrounding areas or childhood objects including books and toys. You will become object detectives, using your new found skills to try to decode a table of mystery objects. This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying any of our Arts & Humanites based subjects.

2. The Great Facebook Debate: How to be a Sociologist in the Modern Age
In this session we will look at what it takes to become a sociologist, wherein our everyday life becomes the focus of systematic study. We will have a look at what sociologists have to say about our use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The one thing that is certain is that they definitely don't agree with each other; let's get scrolling! This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying Social Sciences based subjects.

3. Meet the Ancestors
This session will introduce you to DNA, chromosomes and genes, looking at the similarities between humans and other animals. You will learn about the Human Genome Project and investigate how closely related humans really are to chimpanzees. This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying Science based subjects.
