Description

What is it? 6 FREE taster sessions and an optional tour of the University campus

Who is it for? This is an open event for anyone 21 or over, without traditional university entry qualifications, who like to find out more about studying at the University of Sheffield. No prior knowledge or experience of higher education is required.

When is it? Thursday 25th January, 09:30am until 12pm (with optional campus tour starting at 12pm)

Where is it? The Discovery Rooms, University of Sheffield Students' Union, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TQ


You can register for up to two of these sessions. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience of the topic to attend, as they are designed to be interactive or discussion based intros.


Programme of Tasters

9:30am The day will start with registration and refreshments, followed by a brief welcome talk from the department.

10am First set of taster sessions begin.


Cartooning Around: History Through Humour

The study of history always involves the analysis of primary sources, and this includes additional materials beyond more conventional written sources. This taster offers a fun introduction to using cartoons for historical analysis, showing how Britain's relationship with Nazi Germany was perceived in the 1930s and the Second World War.

How to Save Millions Of Lives With A Bar Of Soap

The taster offers a chance to discuss the importance of handwashing and public health in today’s world, and the chance to use a light-box to see just how clean your hands really are. You will discover the work of physician Dr. Semmelweis , who in 1847 saved the lives of countless women by proposing doctors should wash their hands when delivering babies.

The Great Facebook Debate: How to be a Sociologist in the Modern Age

In this session we will look at what it takes to become a sociologist, wherein our everyday life becomes the focus of systematic study. We will have a look at what sociologists have to say about our use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The one thing that is certain is that they definitely don't agree with each other; let's get scrolling!

Me, Myself and my iPhone: Technology and the Extended Mind

In this session, we will consider the philosophical implications of the ever-increasing role of technology in our lives. Starting with a simple hands-on exercise, we will then consider some of the ways in which technology shapes our knowledge and identity, both individual and collective. This exploration of our relationship with and reliance on different devices will be based on familiar and practical examples, but we will also draw on key theoretical concepts from the philosophy of mind.

Genes in a Bottle

In this session you will learn about genes - what they are made of, how many you have and some of their functions in health and disease, and an introduction to The Human Genome Project. You will also be able to take some genes from your own cells and place these in a vial to take away with you!

When Worlds Collide: The Politics of Business

This discussions focuses on the impact of politics on business and vice versa. It will consider the good and bad, touch on ethics and corporate responsibility; not just legislation. You will use some high profile case studies to illustrate key points, and discuss ideas with the group.
