How to make journalism pay: Think Outside the Box
Saturday, 26th November, 10am till 2pm (including lunch)
If you’re freelance and would like an injection of exciting new ideas or you are considering a freelance career then this event is not to be missed.
FREELANCE SALON is an NUJ workshop that will explore different ways of making journalism pay, featuring freelance speakers who will share their experience of operating in a media industry that offers a wealth of new opportunities.
At this introductory event, 4 freelances with diverse and exciting portfolios will share how they have developed a variety of income streams followed by Q&A sessions and an opportunity to network with fellow freelancers over tea/coffee and lunch.
10am Arrival: Coffee/tea/pastries and networking
10.30-11.00 Speaker 1 (15-20 min presentation and 10-15 min Q&A)
11.00-11.30 Speaker 2 (as above)
11.30-11.40 Comfort break for loo/coffee
11.40-12.10 Speaker 3 (as above)

12.45-2pm Networking lunch
SPEAKERS (in no particular order at the moment):
- setting up a local/community news service, making the business sustainable, grant funding, advertising revenue, conflict of interest, risks, pitfalls, advantages..
- How to self-publish; e-books
- Creating a mixed portfolio of freelance clients
- Pitching to commissioning editors: how to solve their problems
- How to fake it as an expert (self-publishing a book ... and how to win an Award!)
- Crowd-funding for news & investigative journalism
Please note that all the speakers are being paid for their contribution to this event!
The South Wales Freelance Salon is organised by NUJ Training Wales and the Cardiff & SE Wales branch of the NUJ.
The event is subsidised by the NUJ’s Cardiff & SE Wales and Swansea & West branches, Freelance Industrial Council, Wales Executive Committee and NUJ Training Wales.
Participant attendance cost: £10 for NUJ members; £20 for non-members.
We have a cancellation policy of two weeks (10 working days) for this workshop because of the costs associated with running it. If you cancel in this period we will be unable to refund any fees.
If you are a member of the NUJ and have been made redundant in the last six months or are facing redundancy you are entitled to two days of training free of charge. Please contact us with your NUJ membership number and your redundancy notice.
