About this event

Music • Hip Hop & Rap

Freestyle Thirst is a space rooted in spontaneous lyricism, while welcoming artists from all disciplines to come together and create improvised magic.

What is Freestyle?

While freestyle can mean many things, here it refers specifically to improvised lyricism, often performed over music — though we explore the full range of what that can mean.

Who is this for?

MCs, musicians, poets, actors, beatboxers, dancers — and anyone curious and creative — are all welcome. All skill levels are embraced. And if performing’s not your thing, you’re still part of it. Audience members have the luxury of contributing creatively, without the pressure to perform.

What can we expect?

Each session blends original games and challenges, organic cyphers, and plenty of open experimentation. No two events are quite the same — and that unpredictability is part of the magic. There aren’t many spaces like this in the world. We're building this with the community, so the energy and direction grow with those who show up.

Where does the money go?

All proceeds go directly towards:

  • Running the event
  • A feature-length documentary on freestyle culture
  • Acaprov — the improvised musical theatre show without which this event wouldn’t exist

Frequently asked questions

Where inside of Shoreditch Balls is the event?

In the basement which they call 'The Green' (the descending staircase is located to the far right hand side of the building as you walk in). Always feel free to ask staff for further directions.

How much experience do I need to participate?

None. As long as you come with an open and enthusiastic energy, and respect our values and etiquette, you can have a good time.

Do I need to perform if I purchase a ticket?

No, you can observe the entire session, or parts of it, as an audience member.

Are non lyrical artists welcome to join in? For example, could musicians play instruments here?

Absolutely. THIS is the type of collaboration we are most encouraging of, and we would equally be excited for any other types of artists to help develop the night's spontaneous vibe.
