The film itself:
Le Grand Voyage. Réda (Nicolas Cazalé) is a French-Moroccan teenager due to sit his Baccalauréat. When his devout father (Mohamed Majd) asks Réda to accompany him on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he reluctantly agrees. However, the father insists that they travel by car. Their tense relationship is very evident from the start, as Réda speaks only in French to his father, who, in return, speaks only in Arabic. As both embark on a road trip thousands of kilometres away from the familiarity of southern France, the once icy father-son relationship begins to thaw.
Along the way, the two meet many interesting characters and scenarios, as they travel from Provence through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, and Jordan before finally reaching Saudi Arabia. Réda learns about Islam, why his father thought it would be preferable to make the pilgrimage by car, and why he will not speak to his son in his - it turns out - impeccable French.
