Description

What is it? And is it for me?

Fresh Air Business Walking is a membership and pay-per-walk programme for business leaders and their guests seeking fresh air, fresh perspectives, and fresh conversations.

It's an opportunity to relax and draw energy and inspiration from stunning natural environments. A powerful alternative to indoor meetings. A more creative and engaging form of networking. A n opportunity to share and resolve major work challenges.

On this walk, we are going to explore "Extreme Ownership", a mindset and set of associated leadership practices described in US Navy SEALs Jocko Willink's and Leif Babin's book of that name; and applied to a range of business leadership challenges. We will inquire into what this could mean for you and the business you lead.

We will do this over a fabulous 12 kms circuit around the Pentland Hills, on the southern edge of Edinburgh. The route will take us from Flotterstone over Turnhouse and Carnethy Hills before dropping down for the return leg alongside Loganlee and Glencorse Reservoirs. The views are breathtaking at every turn.

Where are we meeting? Is there car parking? What about toilets?

We are meeting at the Flotterstone Information Centre car park. This is 100m up the road from the Flotterstone Inn, off the A702 Biggar Road, Near East Howgate, EH26 0PP.

Parking is free, and there are public toilets.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

  • Email: dave@freshairlearning.com

How fit do I need to be? How far are we walking?

  • After a gentle start the route heads uphill for around 300m/1000'. This will feel stiff, and we will have plenty of stops to catch our breath and admire the views. Thereafter the route is undulating for around 2kms before dropping down for the return leg alongside two reservoirs. We will be on established paths and roads throughout.

  • The total distance is 11 kms with around 450m/1500' of ascent and descent. The walk will take around 4.5 hours.

  • We will be walking at a pace which allows people to talk comfortably, and we will be stopping every 30 minutes or so.

  • If you are in any doubt about your ability to undertake this walk, consult your GP and the organisers.

What clothing & equipment will I need?

  • Walking boots or sturdy footwear with good grip, and ideally ankle support. Wellies are not suitable.

  • Waterproof over-trousers and water-proof jacket. Let us know if you need help with these.

  • A spare warm layer for stops.

  • Warm headgear and gloves and/or sun hat, sun lotion, lip salve according to conditions.

  • Midge repellent (e.g. Skin So Soft) and midge head net. Let us know if you need help with these.

  • Your own snacks and water (1.5 litres. More if a very hot day).

  • Personal medication as required.

  • Small rucksack, with waterproof bags to keep contents dry.

  • Walking poles can be very useful. Let us know if you need help with these.

What about bad weather?

The walk will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather. The route may be modified to make the best of conditions. Your leaders are highly qualified and experienced, and will ensure everyone has a safe walk.
