Event description

Description

Free. 15 places for 16-25 year olds

Location: Collective, City Observatory, 38 Calton Hill, Edinburgh, EH7 5AA.
Meet on the Steps of the Observatory at 2pm

Collective is an arts organisation that opened on its new site on Calton Hill in 2018. This visit includes a building tour and introduction to artist Helen McCrorie’s exhibition If play is neither inside nor outside, where is it? This new film centres on a child-led outdoor playgroup that meets in the grounds of a former military camp in Scotland. After the tour we’ll reflect on ideas for the zine in Collective’s new Transit House learning space.

This event is the first in a series of six sessions which forms part of a zine-making project about your experience of art and architecture, conceived as part of Fresh Fruit, The Fruitmarket Gallery’s peer-led programme for young adults aged 16-25. Zines are small self-made publications and can be about anything – what you did last week; the music or art you like; or political, personal and social issues. Quick and cheap to produce, they have a radical underground history where anything goes and different voices can be heard.

In collaboration with the Edinburgh Zine Library and Out of the Blueprint, you will design and produce a collective zine to be presented in The Fruitmarket Gallery bookshop’s pop up shop in Waverley Mall.

In the context of The Fruitmarket Gallery’s building refurbishment in 2019-20, the programme includes visits to recently developed arts and cultural spaces in Edinburgh to look at their buildings and exhibition programmes. We’ll also take an exclusive peek at The Fruitmarket Gallery’s building development in progress.

Creative content for the zine is up to you. No prior experience is necessary and you’ll be supported to develop ideas and pursue your interests to make a collective publication that could include exhibition reviews, photography, doodles and creative writing. Roles on the project include design and production of the publication, so there’s something for everyone interested in writing, drawing, art, buildings and professionally producing work for public display.

The project takes place over six Saturday afternoons followed by a launch event, and you can come along to one or all of the sessions.
