About this event
They say that if you can design a tabletop game, you can design video games. So we'll be taking you through the creative journey of designing your very own tabletop game, learning what it really takes to keep players of all ages and gaming experiences hooked.
We’ve teamed up with Square Enix for this special game design jamand inviting young people, aspirinf professionals and families to explore game creation in a supportive environment where games are made. This amazing opportunity will allow you to learn game design fundamentals and meet others as excited about games as you are!
You'll work in teams to brainstorm, design, and create tabletop games using cards, dice, craft materials and more. For those who are more competitive, there will be prizes for the best game designs judged by our panel of industry professionals. We'll have a prestigious judging panel made up of games professionals and the mayamada team to evaluate your creations, with fantastic prizes on offer for the winners.
Video Game Representation
The Friends & Family Game Design Jam is part of our "Do I Look Like A Gamer?" video game representation campaign, which is a yearly initiative to challenge stereotypes in gaming culture and industry. We are working to empower future generations of diverse talent and raise awareness of career paths in gaming. We also provide opportunities for aspiring professionals to develop key skills through inclusive, community-focused events like this one!
What To Expect
This is game design with a twist. You can expect a low-pressure environment to learn, create, and have fun while developing your very own tabletop game.
On arrival at Square Enix, you'll be greeted by the mayamada team and given all the materials you need to create your game. We'll start with an introduction to game design fundamentals before breaking into teams and given the theme to inspire your game creation. Our industry professionals will be on hand throughout the day to provide guidance and feedback as your ideas take shape. You'll have access to a wide range of materials including cards, dice, tokens, and craft supplies to bring your game to life.
At the end of the day, each team will present their game to our panel of judges. The judges will be looking for creativity, teamwork, clear rules, and most importantly - fun!
All the while, you'll be able to see photos from the "Do I Look Like A Gamer?" campaign showcasing the diversity of people who play and make games. You will also have the opportunity to get involved by taking your own photo for a chance to win a mayamada manga!
Who Is This Event For?
This is an event for young people, families, and anyone interested in learning about game design, regardless of experience level. No prior knowledge of game design is required - just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
You'll end the day with a deeper understanding of game design principles and maybe even a new game to take home. Parents, guardians, and carers are encouraged to participate alongside younger attendees. It's a great opportunity for families to work together creatively while learning about the game development process.
We are committed to ensuring accessibility for all participants and will take measures to accommodate the needs of all guests and team members.
