The Friends of Sheffield Castle welcome you to this day exploring the archaeology of Sheffield Castle.


11:00 The Folklore of Sheffield and its Castle: an examination of legends concerning underground passages and Anglo-Saxon halls

David Clarke, Department of Media and Arts and Communication, Sheffield Hallam University:

The talk will look at two local stories from Castlegate: the ancient tradition concerning a tunnel that linked the Castle with the Manor and the mystery surrounding the site of the Hall of Waltheof.


1:00 Recent discoveries at Sheffield Castle - Wessex Archaeology present the medieval and post-medieval castle remains and later industry of the site.


3:00 The excavations of the Castle in the 1920’s and 1950’s

The excavations of the Castle in the 1920’s and 1950’s and what we have learnt about the archaeology of the Castle.


A question and answer session will follow the final talk.

Museums Sheffield will be exhibiting artefacts from the museum archive/displays throughout the day.
