Event description

Description

All Friends of the Earth Scotland members are warmly invited to our Annual General Meeting on Saturday 22th June 2019

Morning session: Annual General Meeting

Friends of the Earth Scotland (FoES) is a democratic, grassroots organisation and the AGM is an opportunity for members to influence our direction as well as elect members of our Board. This event gives you a chance to meet the team, to learn about our campaigns and strengthen your connections with other members.

We are particularly keen to encourage newer members to attend and get fully involved.

The Friends of the Earth Scotland AGM will be held in the morning, with registration starting at 10 am for a 10:30 am start. Please remember that as a member you can put up a motion for debate or even stand for the Board (details below). We hope to see plenty of you there and particularly encourage new members to come along. Following the AGM there will be a free lunch for members.

Afternoon session: Prof. Kevin Anderson talk

Can meaningful hope spring from revealing the depth of our climate failure?
by Professor Kevin Anderson

will be at a separate venue
Lecture Theatre G.03, 50 George Square,
Edinburgh EH8 9JX
This is a short 5 minutes walk

Kevin's talk will begin promptly at 14:00 and those wishing to attend only the afternoon event can register as of 13:15.

In the afternoon, we will welcome our special guest speaker Kevin Anderson, Professor of Energy and Climate Change University of Manchester (Tyndall Centre), Uppsala University (CEMUS). Kevin will discuss the question "Can meaningful hope spring from revealing the depth of our climate failure?"

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
Leonard Cohen

Peel away the layers of dangerously naïve hope and unfounded optimism and the mitigation challenge posed by the Paris Agreement now demands the rapid and profound re-shaping of contemporary society. Whilst the models dominating the mitigation agenda employ evermore exotic and speculative technologies to remain ‘politically palatable’, the arithmetic of emissions increasingly embeds equity at the heart of any mathematically cogent strategy. Dress it up however we may like, the Parisian mitigation agenda is ultimately a rationing issue. Until we are prepared to acknowledge this, we will continue our reckless pathway towards a 3-5°C future.

Against such a depressing backdrop, do the rapid emergence of new and vociferous constituencies and the heightened profile of climate change suggest early cracks and the prospect of new light?
