About this event

Melete Gallery is delighted to present its latest exhibition, 'From decomposition to new form: biological inspirations in art'. This unique exhibition represents a significant step in Melete Gallery's mission to highlight intriguing phenomena in contemporary art and foster dialogue on important topics. The exhibition brings together the compelling work of two fascinating artists: Sylwia Marszałek-Jeneralczyk from Poland and Riina Õun from Estonia.

Both artists, employing diverse media and strategies, delve into fundamental questions surrounding the biological essence of matter and natural transformations. The exhibition meticulously explores the tension between the inherent impermanence of biological materials in art and the potential for substituting natural elements with alternatives such as plastic or metal. Crucially, it also examines the pivotal role of documentation within both the creative process and the viewer's reception. Furthermore, the exhibition thoughtfully contemplates the intricate interactions that occur between biological forms, the materials that symbolise them, the artists themselves, and the viewers.

Riina Õun focuses on the ephemerality of organic matter and its interaction with the environment, often involving living organisms. She creates conceptual fashion objects from biodegradable substances that decompose, challenging the traditional notion of permanence, or spatial installations from materials that are literally consumed by animals, emphasising the cycle of life, transience, and return to nature. A crucial element of her work is engaging communities in co-creation of her  projects, along with photographic and video documentation that captures the process of the artworks' disappearance, making it an integral part of the art.

In contrast, Sylwia Marszałek-Jeneralczyk concentrates on an intellectual analysis of the relationship between humans and nature, hybridising biological forms with technological and industrial elements. Her works are a deep study of cultural and ethnographic themes, where nature confronts modernity. The artist investigates memory, the flow of information, and how even dead biological forms can inspire new, complex structures, often based on industrial materials. Her creative output serves as a visual interpretation of philosophical and social research into human impact on natural processes.

By thoughtfully juxtaposing these two distinct yet complementary artistic perspectives, 'From decomposition to new form: biological inspirations in art' offers the public an unparalleled opportunity to reflect upon the complex interconnections between nature, technology, and artistic expression. The exhibition will be available in Melete Gallery's virtual space from July 10th. We warmly invite you to explore this intriguing exhibition, which undoubtedly pushes the boundaries of artistic inquiry.
