Event description

Description

A free event at the University of Salford, hosted by the British Association for Irish Studies and generously sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Government of Ireland.

A celebration of the creativity and activism of Northern Irish women, this event will feature a series of talks from academics and readings from creative writers as well as lots of opportunity for chats.

Northern Irish culture is having an unprecedented moment in the public eye: writers are now being published by the most prestigious houses. Anna Burns’ critically-lauded novel Milkman won the Booker Prize and Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls is enjoying worldwide popularity. At the same time, the political situation in Northern Ireland is going through a period of uncertainty due to debates over the nature of the border after Brexit and the collapse of the Stormont government. But while Burns and McGee hit the headlines, this event will draw out even more stories of Northern Irish women’s lives, showing audiences that women have been engaged in activism, artistic production and creative writing in even the most difficult times. This event, then, will not just be of interest to the Irish community but also to anyone interested in women’s writing and contemporary culture. We aim to send the audience off with their appetite whetted to know more about Northern Irish women by introducing them to snapshots of this secret history.

Speakers include writers Lucy Caldwell and Rosemary Jenkinson and academics Dr Claire Pierson (Liverpool), Dr Fiona Bloomer (MMU), Dr Alison Garden (QUB) and Eli Davies (UU). The event will be hosted and introduced by Dr Caroline Magennis (Salford).

The venue, Chapman Lecture Theatre 5, is on the University of Salford campus close to Salford Cresent Train Station: https://www.salford.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/1058187/university-of-salford-campus-map.pdf
