Event description

Description

A trio of poets, Chrys Salt, Bashabi Fraser and Alan Riach will be reading from their recently launched pamphlets at this not to be missed event.

From East to West launches two new pamphlet collections - The Homing Bird from Bashabi Fraser and The Punkawallah’s Rope from Chrys Salt. They bring you a touch of spice in the UK-India Year of Culture and the 70th Anniversary year of Partition. Chrys and Bashabi are joined by Alan Riach reading from his latest poetry collection The Winter Book and two even more recent poems about the experience of India.

Chrys' new collection The Punkawallah's Rope explores the challenges India poses - culturally, spiritually and socially for a first time visitor. Bashabi’s new collection, Homing Bird explores the diasporic experience of living between two worlds. Borders, both physical and emotional are challenged in both collections as nations reach across shadow lines in a dialogue that has continued between Britain and India for centuries.

Alan Riach’s first book of poems since 2009’s Homecoming, The Winter Book, has been called ‘a vision of our times’ and addresses some of the most difficult issues, 2009-2017, but it’s also a celebration of friends, landscapes, domestic and public actions that are shared strengths and virtues.

"The poems in The Winter Book connect people, places and culture across geographies, nationally in Scotland and internationally in global, political contexts of loss and affirmation, sorrow and anger, personal and public worlds, as memories flow into history."

DOUGLAS GIFFORD

Born in West Bengal, Edinburgh-based Bashabi Fraser’s poetry reflects an ease at living in two cultures; for fellow poet and academic Alan Riach, the new convener of the Saltire Society, such openness and connectivity is a key part of Scottish culture. Chrys Salt approaches India as a first time visitor confronting the complexities of this most challenging of continents.

Doors open 6:30, for 7:00 start.
