From Face Masks to Free Press: Global Reporting in 2020 will bring together the international journalism community to explore and debate the most pressing challenges and solutions facing our industry during the pandemic. Special guest speakers include Mishal Husain (BBC), Catherine Norris-Trent (France24), Leandro Demori (The Intercept) and Athandiwe Saba (Mail & Guardian).
DAY ONE • Wednesday, 21 October
Fighting the Disinformation Epidemic | 11:00 - 12:00
Access to reliable, accurate and impartial information has never felt more important. Yet the coronavirus pandemic has only accelerated the proliferation of disinformation, fake news and conspiracies around the world. For this session, a panel of experts will examine how the pandemic has impacted the spread of disinformation and look to steps we can take as journalists and filmmakers to tackle this.

How Journalists Can Monitor TikTok To Inform Their Reporting | 13:00 - 14:30

TikTok is the app of the moment. Love it or hate it, it makes sharing content and monitoring trends, hashtags and users incredibly easy. In this workshop you will learn the open source intelligence gathering skills necessary to allow you to find and verify content on TikTok, and monitor where it is being shared elsewhere.

Framing The Refugee Crisis | 14:30 - 15:30

Image and language, when used in the right way, has the power to build empathy and understanding when reporting on the refugee crisis. This screening of the documentary Libya: The Infernal Trap, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and a panel of refugee reporting experts, will explore the importance of the media’s portrayal of the refugee crisis.
