About this event

For too long, the media has shaped public attitudes to rape — often reinforcing the very myths that silence survivors and excuse harm.

But change is happening. Survivors are speaking out, the public is listening, and some journalists are flipping the script.

Join us for a powerful and unapologetic conversation about truth-telling, power, and what a survivor-centred media culture could look like.

Hosted by Rape Crisis South London, this live-streamed evening event brings together:

  • Red Godfrey-Sagoo , CEO of Rape Crisis South London, sharing findings from our new Writing the Wrongs report and setting the tone for a more honest, survivor-centred approach to media
  • Jess Austin, Metro journalist and Co-Founder of This Is Not Right, the paper’s bold year-long campaign to expose and challenge violence against women and girls. Jess Austin is Metro's First-Person and Opinion Editor and, along with her colleague Lucy Mapstone, set up and runs the This Is Not Right campaign. This Is Not Right is a year-long campaign launched in November 2024; it aims to highlight the sheer scale of violence against women and empower Metro's readers to realise they have a role to play in bringing about its end.
  • Ellie Softley, Chief of Staff at Everyone’s Invited, and one of the founding members of the movement. Since its inception, she has played a central role in shaping the organisation’s mission to expose and eradicate rape culture through education, survivor support, and systemic change. With a background in sexual health education and political activism, she has worked extensively with students, educators, and institutions across the UK to address misogyny, sexual violence, and gender-based harm. She led the creation and delivery of Everyone’s Invited’s first national education programme.

Together, we’ll explore how reporting is changing, what’s still holding us back, and how institutions, the media and the public can take accountability — and action.

You’ll hear directly from those creating change, and take part in live polls and Q&A.
